Ask any former team mate or coach of Mike Fox to describe him and one thing all can agree upon is that he gives 110% percent to whatever he does. That's the same attitude he brings to his business interests today. "Success", Mike says, "is about a good attitude and hard work" – and Mike has enjoyed much success in his life. Nevertheless, it didn't come easy for him. He grew up in Akron, Ohio, the 6th child in a family of 8 children. At age 14, he became ill and lost 80 lbs before doctors finally diagnosed a rare condition of a double artery crossing over his duodenum. Following surgery, Mike had many months of recovery time to decide his future. When asked by his high school guidance counselor about his plans after school, Mike replied, "I'm going to play in the NFL". The counselor considered the 100 lb sophomore, who spent most of a year in a hospital bed and had never played organized football, and gently suggested a trade instead. However, Mike knew he had all the tools he needed to make his dream a reality. That's because he understands that drive and desire coupled with determination and knowledge always equal success. Just 2 short years after almost dying, he received a full scholarship to play football for West Virginia University and remains one of the best defensive linemen in Mountaineer history, according to legendary former Coach Don Nehlen. Mike was drafted in 1990 in the second round (51st overall) by the New York Giants and went on to win in Super Bowl XXV that same season. Later he was the first free agent signed by the Carolina Panthers in 1995 and was part of Carolina's 1996 NFC West Divisional Champions.
In the recently published autobiography of fellow N.Y.Giant, Michael Strahan, there is a story of Mike's efforts during practice; ..."He hits as hard on Wednesday as he intends to hit on Sunday and some fellow teammates wanted him to ease up a bit. But for Mike there is only one way to be successful in any endeavor, and that is to give it your best effort all the time"... The same intuitive instinct that helped Mike read offensive lines and make QB sacks is what guides him in business today. During his 9 years in the NFL, he was developing a network of companies to be the focus of his life after football. He began his foray into real estate investments with the purchase of his first home. At the young age of 23 he eschewed a more glamorous lifestyle in NYC to purchase a luxury duplex in Lincoln Park, New Jersey. He occupied 2200 sq ft on one side of the unit and utilized the other half to generate income. After moving to the Carolinas in 1995 he began purchasing and developing land. His first commercial land acquisition in Mecklenburg County, NC, is now the gateway to ___________________ located at I-485 and S.Tryon. Although running other successful companies, gradually his focus centered on real estate development, particularly in the Lake Norman area where he partnered with a contractor to build custom residential luxury homes. He acquired land and developed 3 subdivisions on the shores of Lake Norman. He continues to have holdings in Stutts Cove and Lake View Heights although no longer actively marketing these subdivisions.
Since 1999 Mike has narrowed his business focus to commercial real estate development and to his granite countertop company, Fox Tops All, LLC, located in Mooresville, NC. "I guess some people can say I am like granite", the 6'8" Mike laughs, "I'm strong and durable and not easy to move!" He began _________________ , "The Countertop Specialists", in 2000 as one of his many entrepreneurial pursuits. "Our business grows every year and I believe it's because we offer a great product with exceptional customer service", he says. Recently, he upgraded the technology of his production facility and installed a water recycling system. He has enjoyed steady growth in business and set records in 2007 in spite of the slowing economy. It's the ability to have comprehension and vision for the future trends of the market that guide Mike in his business ventures and make him a much sought after partner in investments. He has long understood the value of the I-485 corridor and the future growth of the market there and continues to seek land acquisitions and development in these areas. In all of Mike's business deals he believes his success is based on the principal of offering true value for the investor.
